City Break in Rome

Rome in March? A perfect choice! The city welcomed me with sunshine, pleasant temperatures, and a touch of moody evenings – so if you’re planning a trip during this time of year, pack a light coat and an umbrella. The weather was ideal for exploring, and the city itself? A total dream – history, charm, flavors, and views that stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

Airport Transfers & Late-Night Adventures

My flight landed late at night, and due to a delay, I missed the train from Fiumicino. Luckily, I wasn’t the only one – a few of us in the same situation teamed up and shared a mini-bus taxi. It ended up costing around €15 per person, so not too bad at all.
For the return flight from Ciampino, I also chose a taxi (booked easily through the hotel reception), as it was a late departure.

I stayed in a hotel about a 20-minute walk from the Trevi Fountain and just 10 minutes from Termini – a super convenient location for exploring the city mostly on foot.

Sightseeing – Must-Sees & Smart Tips

On our first day, we managed to visit the Vatican, the Colosseum, and the Trevi Fountain. It happened to be the first Sunday of the month, which means free entry to many museums – a fantastic perk, but do keep in mind that you still need to get a (free) ticket first. That means two lines: one to grab your ticket and another to enter the attraction.

A few practical tips:

  • Avoid bringing too many things with you while sightseeing – places like the Colosseum have airport-style security checks.
  • Wear comfy shoes – Rome is best discovered on foot!

Other highlights we visited:

  • Spanish Steps – perfect for a quick break and some great people-watching
  • Pantheon – the dome is jaw-dropping!
  • Roman Forum – walking through the ruins feels like stepping into a history book.

But my absolute favorite spot in Rome? Pincian Hill (Pincio) – the views over Rome are stunning, there’s a lovely park, parrots flying around, and you can wander for hours with a coffee in hand. Pure magic.

Italian Food – Vegan Gems & Sweet Treats

Let’s talk food – because in Italy, it’s an experience on its own. I’m vegan, and I absolutely loved the meals I had at Buddy – delicious, creative, and full of flavor.
For dessert? Venchi is a must! Whether you’re vegan or not, there’s something for everyone – from creamy chocolate to dairy-free gelato.

Coffee in Rome is affordable, rich, and available on practically every corner. Fresh juices are also easy to find and perfect for a midday pick-me-up.

A Perfect Farewell with a View

On our last day, we treated ourselves to a final meal at Oro Bistro. Gorgeous views, amazing food – the perfect cherry on top of a wonderful trip.

Mostly on Foot – With a Metro Shortcut

We walked almost everywhere, which really helped us soak in the atmosphere and discover little corners of the city. In the evenings, we’d hop on the metro to head back to the hotel – fast, efficient, and well-connected.

Insider Tip – Go Early for Trevi

The Trevi Fountain is always packed. Seriously – day or night, it’s buzzing with people. BUT… if you go at sunrise, you’ll catch it in near silence, with soft golden light and way fewer tourists. It’s a magical, peaceful moment and totally worth the early wake-up.

Is It Worth It? Absolutely, Yes!

Rome is a city that charms you instantly. It’s perfect for a quick getaway, rich with history, beauty, and flavor at every turn. I came back in love and already dreaming of my next visit.

If you’re thinking about a short escape to the Eternal City – don’t think twice. Rome is waiting for you, and trust me – it’s unforgettable. Mostly on Foot – With a Metro Shortcut
