I absolutely love the northern part of Tenerife for its unique climate and lush vegetation. This region is full of natural beauty, with its rich greenery, misty mountains, and serene coastal spots. If you’re looking to discover a different side of the island, Tenerife Norte is where you can find hidden gems and tranquil landscapes away from the crowds.
Natural Pools and Charcos
One of the highlights of Tenerife Norte is its natural pools – crystal-clear pools formed by volcanic rock, offering a refreshing swim surrounded by breathtaking views. One of my favorite spots is Charco de la Laja, a true hidden gem. But there are many other wonderful charcos to explore, such as Charco del Viento, Charco Los Chochos, and Charco Las Mujeres. These natural pools are stunning, but it’s crucial to exercise caution when swimming. The ocean here can be unpredictable, with waves that can change in intensity quickly. Always be aware of the signs and safety warnings before entering, and never underestimate the power of the ocean – even if you’re a strong swimmer. If the waves are too large, it’s best not to take the risk.

Must-See Attractions in Tenerife Norte
If you’re looking to explore the island’s more scenic and rugged side, there are several places in Tenerife Norte that I highly recommend:
- Parque Rural de Anaga: A beautiful natural park known for its lush, misty forests and stunning hiking trails. It’s a perfect place for nature lovers, offering breathtaking views of the mountains and coastline.
- Masca: A small village in Tenerife’s Teno mountains, known for its rugged landscapes and as the starting point for the popular Masca Gorge hike. The hike takes you down to the ocean, offering impressive views along the way. However, the area can get crowded, especially with tourists, so it’s best to visit with some planning. If you’re into hiking and nature, it’s worth the trip.
- Benijo: This remote beach, surrounded by dramatic cliffs, is a perfect spot for those who enjoy the raw beauty of nature. It’s ideal for a peaceful walk or just taking in the stunning views of the ocean.
- Icod de Los Vinos: Home to the famous Dragon Tree, which is over 1,000 years old. The town itself is charming, with cobbled streets and plenty of local culture to discover.
- Puerto de la Cruz: A picturesque town with beautiful gardens, volcanic beaches, and a laid-back atmosphere. It’s perfect for a day of wandering around and soaking in the charm of the northern coast.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife – Highlights of the Capital

Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, is a lively city offering a mix of modern architecture, rich history, and natural beauty. Here are the must-see spots when visiting:
Auditorio de Tenerife
Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, this iconic building is a must-see for its stunning, wave-like architecture. It hosts cultural events and offers beautiful views of the city and ocean.
Parque García Sanabria
The largest park in Santa Cruz, this green oasis is perfect for a peaceful stroll, featuring exotic plants, sculptures, and fountains right in the city center.
Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre
This museum showcases the natural history of Tenerife, including prehistoric animals and local archaeological findings. It’s home to the famous Guanche mummies.
Playa de Las Teresitas
A short drive from the city, this beach offers golden sands, calm waters, and stunning views. It’s ideal for a relaxing day by the sea.
Port of Santa Cruz
The Port of Santa Cruz is a lively hub for both local and international cruise ships. Take a walk along the harbor, enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, or relax in one of the nearby cafes with views of the water.
Santa Cruz Sign
For the perfect photo opportunity, head to the iconic Santa Cruz sign located along the waterfront. It’s a great spot to capture the essence of the city with the ocean and cityscape in the background.
Castillo de San Juan Bautista
A 17th-century fortress offering a glimpse into the island’s history and great views of the port.
Shopping & Dining
Explore Calle del Castillo for shopping and local markets. Santa Cruz also offers great dining options, with traditional Canarian dishes like papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) to try.
And of course – acai bowl! My must-have food wherever I go!
Santa Cruz is geographically located in the northeastern part of the island, but locals often refer to it as part of the south. This is likely due to its role as the island’s capital and its connection to the more touristy areas of southern Tenerife.
Tenerife Norte offers a different experience from the south of the island, with its lush landscapes, dramatic coastline, and peaceful natural pools. Just remember to be cautious and enjoy the beauty responsibly!
